Height Measurements:
On Wall installation (OW)
OW is optional in its placement: to the eaves or above the window, or level with the window, or partly in the window space, etc., to your preference.
Please note: The overall height of the roller shutter is to the top of the head box, so if the head box is above the window or door use the table below to calculate the overall height.
The head box increases in sizes from 150mm 165mm 180mm and 205mm in relationship with the height; see the table below.
Please note: On wall (OW) has greater flexibility and is more accepting of ‘out of square’ windows.
Please note: When the Roller Shutter is fully open, the bottom bar of the curtain will still protrude out from the bottom of the head box by about 50mm.
Cyclone Roller Shutter The bottom 69mm Guide is not included in overall height if you would like the side guides to be flush with the bottom of the bottom guide you will need to add 69mm to the overall height and the bottom guide will need to be cut down to fit in between the side guides. I also recommend adding 5mm to the overall height to prevent water being trapped on the window sill behind the bottom guide.
In-Reveal installation (IR)
IR is determined by the sill and above-window opening (lintel), as illustrated above.
Please note: In-reveal (IR) allows for zero margin for error in measurements.
Width Measurements:
Ensure you measure both sides of the window and use the largest of the two sides.
On Wall installation (OW)
For OW, the overall width of the roller shutter is the window opening plus the width of the guides.
Domestic Roller Shutter Guides: 53mm wide each, and there are two (x 2),
So, total width of shutter = width of window plus 106mm.
Cyclone Roller Shutter Guides: 69mm wide each, and there are two (x 2),
So, total width of shutter = width of window plus 138mm.
Security Roller Shutter Guides: 53mm wide each, and there are two (x 2),
So, total width of shutter = width of window plus 106mm.
Light Commercial Roller Shutter Guides: 76mm wide each, and there are two (x 2),
So, total width of shutter = width of window plus 152mm.
Please note: We can also supply an extended guide for the Domestic and Security range, which is 69mm x 23mm the channel section is increased from 25mm to 41mm, this will give more stability in the case of abnormal forces being applied.
Extended Guides Roller Shutter Guides: 69mm wide each, and there are two (x 2),
So, total width of shutter = width of window plus 138mm.
Please note: On wall (OW) has greater flexibility and is more accepting of ‘out of square’ windows.
In-Reveal installation (IR)
IR width is determined by the window aperture at its smallest point (e.g. the top of the window may measure 1200mm but the bottom may measure 1203mm and the middle measures 1205mm – your measurement should then be 1200 for overall width).
If the head box is to be fitted at the narrowest point ( as described above ) reduce the width by 2mm to 1198mm so you know that the head box will fit between the opening.
If the narrowest point is at the bottom stick to that measurement.
Please note: In-reveal (IR) allows for zero margin for error in measurements.
Please note: That some outward opening windows and doors many not open with In-reveal (IR) installation. The guide is 53mm wide and may interfere with outward opening windows and doors; in this case On Wall installation may be your only option.
Head box Sizes
In case you are wondering “But how far will that ‘Box’ thing stick out?”, the table below shows the relationship between a Roller Shutters’ size and how big the Head Box will be.
The height of the head box for the BC45 is the same as the width of the box (i.e. 150mm box is 150mm high x 150mm wide).
Please note: The battery motor is too large to fit in the 150mm head box, and is only suitable for the 165mm, 180mm and the 205mm head box.
Domestic Roller Shutter Height, Includes Head box | Head box Sizes |
Up to 1100mm | 150mm |
Up to 1600mm | 165mm |
Up to 2000mm | 180mm |
Up to 3000mm | 205mm |
Cyclone Roller Shutter Height, Includes Head box | Head box Sizes |

Up to 800mm | 150mm |
Up to 1000mm | 165mm |

Up to 1800mm | 205mm |
Up to 2500mm | 230mm |
Up to 3100mm | 250mm |
Please note: Domestic roller shutters that exceed 8 square meters require a centre mullion, eg 3200mm x 2500mm or 8m2, or use the security shutter that will span 8.75 square meters, or the Cyclone shutter that will span 9 square meters, or the Commercial roller shutters which can span 10.8 square meters.
Please note: Although 90% of windows have sills, if your windows don’t, then don’t despair! We have a solution for that.
We can supply a false sill which all roller shutters needs for the curtain to fully close down on.
The sill is aluminium and would be the same colour as the head box and guides and can come in 3 sizes:
24mm x 22mm $6.00 Lm.
24mm x 46mm $8.50 Lm.
24mm x 77mm $12.00 Lm.
To order a sill send an email and request a sill immediately after you place your order
I will then send you a PayPal request for payment.
Protruding door or window handles.
If your door or window handle is protruding out past the exterior wall, it will interfere with the operation of the shutter. This can be easily overcome, we can supply an “aluminium angle” that would be the same colour as the head box and guides, and they come in 3 sizes – 24mm x 22mm, or 24mm x 46mm, or 24mm x 77mm.
This angle with it’s 24mm side is fixed to the wall, allowing it then to protrude out from the wall 22mm or 46mm or 77mm. The guides that support the head box are 53mm wide x 22mm thick, so allowing for the thickness of the guide 22mm, the 22mm x 24mm angle would give a flush fit, the 46mm angle would give you a space of 24mm, and the 77mm angle would give you a space of 55mm. If you have a sill you will need 3 angles (one each side and one for the top), if there is no sill you will need 4 angles. Fit these angles to the wall with the angles facing inward so they are hidden behind the Roller shutter, then fasten it to the angles.
